George admitted that he was tired most of the time and found it to be a lot of pressure to come up with witty things to say all the time. It was as if he was always “on” — performing for an audience constantly. I suggested that it didn’t have to be that way; there were alternative ways of being.
I asked, “What if you were vulnerable enough to just be yourself?” Keep in mind that George was successful. So, his being sarcastic and defensive was working for him. I wondered, “What if being more authentic could produce an even better result?” Was there business he was not getting because of how he was being? Was change at least worth a try?
